Rod or Stick

The traditional method for clearing obstructions from thru-hulls and seacocks when there is no directly attached sea strainer involves the following steps.
  1. Close the seacock valve
  2. Disconnect the hose attached to the seacock.
  3. Place a stick or rod in the seacock
  4. Open the seacock valve, push the stick down, and force obstructions out of the seacock and thru-hull
  5. Remove the stick, close the valve, and reconnect the hose
This method has two problems. First, it allows water to freely enter the vessel while the seacock is open. Second, it may not permanently clear the obstruction. If a plastic bag has been sucked into the thru-hull, it can be pushed away with a stick. However, when the stick is retracted, water flows freely back into the vessel through the thru-hull until the seacock is closed. This movement of water often draws the plastic bag back into the thru-hull opening.

BlastItOut is clearly a superior alternative. But if pressurized water is not available, try placing a BlastItOut sealing stopper in a seacock, then use a 7/16" diameter rod or stick.

Since the stick almost fills the hole in the sealing stopper, only minimal water will enter the vessel when the seacock is open.
